Smoking is the inhalation of the smoke which is from burning tobacco. Smoking act could be occasional or chronic. According to the Encyclopedia of Children’s health; “Smoking is the inhalation of the smoke of burning tobacco that is used mostly in three forms: Cigarettes, pipes, and cigars.
The active ingredient in tobacco is called nicotine. That nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands and then the adrenal glands releases epinephrine into the blood causing several physiologic changes (Encyclopedia of Children’s health). Those changes include but not limited to increase the blood pressure; the heart beat.
The nicotine can play the role of stimulant depends on the circumstances and the amount consumed as stated by Encyclopedia of Children’s health: “Depending on the circumstances and the amount consumed, nicotine can act as either a stimulant or tranquilizer. This dual role explains why people report that smoking relieves them energy and stimulates their mental activity, while others note that smoking relieves anxiety and relaxes them.”
In some circumstances and based on the amount consumed, smoking can have a stimulator and tranquilizer effect in some people. That effect relieves anxiety and relaxes those people who trust in that effect of smoking. Smoking can bring a momentary gratification to smokers.
Aside those supposed beneficial effects; Christopher Wanjek (2011) found five (5) possible health benefits of smoking that are: “1- Smoking lowers risk of knee-replacement surgery; 2- Smoking lower risk of Parkinson’s disease; 3- Smoking lowers risk of obesity; 4- Smoking lowers risk of death after some heart attacks; and 5- Smoking helps the heart drug clopidogel work better.”
Sometimes, smoking ban can negatively impact countries’ economy. But, several people disagree with that statement. Jonathan T. Tomlin (2009) stated: “I found a statistically significant result that the proposed smoking ban lowered the market value of hospitality industry firms. In my sample, that category included bars, restaurants and hotels. Of course, I studied only India, and only one particular smoking ban. Yet the result of my analysis (the only one using this well-established method) certainly establishes that a smoking ban can hurt the hospitality industry.” Smoking ban will cause lost tax revenue to the public sector since smokers will no longer purchase cigarettes. Banning smoking is unconstitutional, it is an infringement on citizens’ rights to freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I believe that smoking has more negative effects than positive.
Because smoking harms almost every organ of human body, there are many advantages of smoking cessation. CDC stated: “Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Causes many diseases and reduces the health of smokers in general. Quitting smoking lowers your risk for smoking-related diseases and can add years to your life.”
Smoking is bad for people who are smoking. It is also dangerous for people who are living around the smokers. Smoking is bad for the environment. It intoxicates the environment with possible negative consequences for people. “Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Causes many diseases and reduces the health of smokers in general. Quitting smoking lowers your risk for smoking-related diseases and can add years to your life” (CDC). About Smoking and Death, CDC said; “Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United states.
Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is about one in five deaths.
Smoking causes more deaths each year than all of those combined: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); Illegal drug use; Alcohol use; Motor vehicle injuries and Firearm-related incident.
More than 10 times as many U.S. citizens have died prematurely from cigarette smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States during its history.” Those statistics are very illustrative. They show the negative aspects of smoking. I believe that smoking has more negative effects than positive.
